EUREMAP Summer School on Marine bioprospecting

Take a deep dive in the world of marine bioprospecting.

During this 5-day Summer Course, you will learn more about the full marine bioprospecting pipeline, including legal and ethical topics (Access & Benefit Sharing, Nagoya protocol…), industrial and lab applications and demonstrations.

The course provides a balanced mix of expert lectures, site visits, hands-on training in the Marine@UGent lab facilities and unique networking opportunities.

The EUREMAP Summer School on Marine Bioprospecting mainly aims at postgraduate students and early-career scientists, both from knowledge institutions as well as from industry.




Participants can obtain a certificate of attendance if they have followed the complete course.



Monday 29 June (starts at lunch) - Kick-off & Introduction to Marine Bioprospecting

Overview of the full bioprospecting pipeline and keynotes from EUREMAP partners, followed by networking opportunities.

Tuesday 30 June – Legislation & Ethics

Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS), FAIR data principles, and regulatory aspects. Includes guest lectures, an expert panel, and a hands-on workshop.

Wednesday 1 July – From Science to Industry

Company visits showcasing real-world applications, complemented by guest lectures from industry experts on contracting and intellectual property.

Thursday 2 July – From Sample to Bioactive Compound

Full hands-on laboratory experience at the Marine@UGent facilities

Friday 3 July (ends after lunch) – Student Innovation Lab

Interactive session where participants apply the knowledge gained throughout the week in a guided, creative exercise. Final reflection with key takeaways and future perspectives.

Cancellation policy

Although the 2026 EUREMAP Summer Course is free of charge for participants, it does incur costs for the organizer. In case of late cancellation (less than 14 days prior to the start of the summer school) or no-show, an amount of 150 EUR will be charged to the registered participant.

Locations & accomodation

The main location of the EUREMAP Summer School 2026 will be the InnovOcean Campus (Jacobsenstraat 1, 8400 Ostend, Belgium), easily reachable by public transport or by car.
Participants are expected to arrange and pay for their own accommodation and travel to Ostend and the main location.

For all parts of the program that take place at other locations, transport will be foreseen by the organizer.
